Remember, the Ball Button will take a swipe at the ball. Even if it's not close enough to pick up, you can knock it off course. Try getting in an enemy's face when you think he's about to pass or shoot and spam the Ball Key to block the ball!
The ball is the whole focus of Smashball. You are trying to get the ball into the enemy goal by throwing it, running it, and passing it. To pick it up, pass it, or block it, you have to use the Ball Button.
To grab the ball, get close to it and hit the Ball Button.
Once you have the ball, you can shoot it by pressing the Fire Button, or you can select a pass target by looking at a teammate and pressing the Ball Button.
Once a pass target is selected, you can pass to them by hitting the Fire Button. The pass will automatically home in on your target, so you should focus on two things: Timing, and Open Passing Lanes.
The Ball Button can be used to communicate your pass readiness to a friendly ballcarrier. Hit it while your team has the ball to inform the ballcarrier that you would like a pass. Or, when you are the pass target, hit it to inform the ballcarrier that you aren't in good position for a pass!
If you decide you don't want to pass, and would rather shoot the ball, hit the Ball Button again to deselect the pass target. Then hit the Fire Button to shoot the ball in the direction you're facing. When taking shots on goal, remember that every class has a different throwing power! Forwards are best, followed by Goalies, then Halfbacks, then Fullbacks.

Your velocity is added to the ball's velocity when you shoot it, making shots while moving sideways especially hard to pull off. Try swinging and turboing to increase your forward velocity for maximum shot speed to catch the goalie off guard!
